Although only three percent of the global population, Americans use 25 percent of the world’s resources. America’s wasteful lifestyles threaten our planet; the rest of the world resents us for it. Hippies were among the first groups in modern times to recognize the need to respect nature and all living things, carrying on Native American and Eastern philosophies. Our modern post-industrial society assumes that people have the right to exploit nature for short-term gains. We must consider the kind of world we will leave to our descendants.
