Marijuana has been used for 1000's of years around the world. For less than 70 years, the US government has tried to destroy this sacred plant. Nearly everyone agrees that the war on weed is unjust, unwise and unwinnable. Recent polls show that over three-quarters of American adults support a person’s right to use marijuana for medicinal purposes. Just as many also believe that users should not be arrested or put in jail.
In fact, medical marijuana is finally becoming increasingly available, in about a dozen US states (mainly out west), for a variety of ailments. How about the rest of the country? Why can't adults in any state have the same safe access to nature's wonder plant. The real gateway drug is alcohol. Experts agree that marijuana is better for individuals and society than alcohol. Heavy pressure by the booze lobby is the main reason marijuana is not legal. Most people agree they would drink less booze if they had access to legal ganja. In fact, many cultures prohibit alcohol and allow cannabis (Hindus, Muslims, and other faiths).
Experts agree that the war on weed is an unfair and unjust waste of taxpayers' money. Criminals are in business only because pot is illegal. Like society's attempts to control alcohol, the 70-year prohibition against marijuana has been a dismal failure. The current prohibition ruins lives – especially young minorities.
As Canada and Europe reform their laws, the U.S. must do so as well. American adults have the same rights to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness as Europeans and Canadians. We all need to get involved in changing the laws at the community and state levels.
