Before
you can learn to be happier, it helps to understand why so many of us
aren’t happy now. Much of our discontent stems from society’s overly
restrictive standards and commercial ideals. Media portrayals and
cultural stereotypes are particularly disrespectful of women and
minorities. There are pressures to act a certain way that favors those
in power.
Companies have a vested interest
in creating needs for their products; this is the foundation of our
economy. They are continually telling us we must buy certain products,
services, values or beliefs in order to be happy. Consumer culture
continues to keeps us on a treadmill of manipulated needs and planned
obsolescence. The “buzz” wears off. By looking outside for
satisfaction, we are missing the treasures inside.
