Hippies had a sense that the world was wide open for their enjoyment and education. We had a sense of wanderlust, along with the freedom and safety to travel that would be undreamed of today. Many hippies journeyed across the US, as well as to other more exotic places (e.g., India and Europe.) Like gypsies or hobos, Hippies did not like to stay in one place too long. When the vibes turned negative in one area, hippies would simply move on – often by hitching rides from friends or strangers. Quite a few young people became hippies by running away from their straight-laced homes. It was safe and easy to even hitch-hike across the country. Hippies recognized the importance of keeping our bodies moving. We are big believers in the power of dance and creative movement. As part of the overall interest in life enhancement, we have tried a variety of exercise routines. In fact, hippies tend to walk more than the average person because of their environmental beliefs. Hippies enjoy hiking in the wild or truckin’ down the street with pride. We welcome opportunities to groove with the rhythms of the natural world. Hippies are basically optimistic. We look on the bright side and try not to get discouraged. If shit happens, we get back truckin’. Hippies possess a strong sense of resilience and determination. We show a subtle confidence from feeling strong in our freedom. Young people have the natural self assurance and appropriate boldness to keep going even in the face of persecution from the establishment. How To Keep on Truckin’: * Travel more – especially to other countries. You will not only have a lot of fun, but will learn to appreciate other philosophies and lifestyles. It also helps to see America through the eyes of the rest of the world (not a pretty picture!) * Get over any fears you have about travel, especially since 9/11. Use common sense, but don’t let terrorism and other extremely rare events keep you from seeing the world and enjoying your life. * Build more movement and exercise into your life. We typically spend too much time sitting in front of televisions and computer screens. Get off your butt and move as much as possible. Dancing and fitness classes are fun and social. * Adopt a varied exercise routine to prevent boredom and stay flexible. Include stretching (e.g., yoga, Pilates, and balance balls); as well as movement (e.g., walking, dancing, swimming, and biking). * Don’t get discouraged. Things do go wrong, but we also bring on our own karma. Just keep doing what you know is right. Stay flexible and welcome change.
