Most Americans have too much stuff but still feel compelled to buy the
latest products. Our consumer economy is based on the harmful practices
of planned obsolescence and disposal products.
Large
corporations thrive on the need for consumers to continuously buy "new
and improved" products. Along with the rest of the world, hippies
resent such mindless consumerism.
We can become happier and
healthier by reducing our wants and adopting the hip lifestyle.
It feels great stepping off the treadmill of manipulated needs and
compulsive consumption. We can make the world a happier and safer place
for future generations, but we must conserve resources for the future.
Let’s
take care of what we have in order to make things last. It should be a
sign of status to have well-maintained cars, well-worn comfortable
clothes, and other stuff that is being reused and recycled. Share your
books, CD’s and other items with friends and family. We will create
less waste, have more fun and lead a more fulfilling life.
