John Lennon left behind an amazing legacy. He was a musician, poet, artist and committed peace activist. He would also like to be remembered as a father and a husband. John was born in the industrial seaport of Liverpool, England on October 9, 1940.
As a member of the biggest rock and roll band in history (The Beatles) John Lennon was famous for his songwriting, singing and provocative comments. For example, he was quoted as saying that the Beatles were more popular than Jesus Christ. This led religious fundamentalists to burn his records. His song “Imagine” became an anti-war anthem. His lyrics typify the hippie generation and the social climate of his generation. After the Beatles parted ways in 1970, Lennon had a successful solo career and musical projects with his wife Yoko Ono.
John and Yoko were political activists that used their fame to influence social change. John Lennon challenged mainstream culture and promoted a diverse society. His impact on the world of music has proven prolific. Even more important is his long term impact on human consciousness. When our children’s children hear John Lennon’s’ name I think he would most like it if he was remembered as the musician who said, “Give peace a chance”.
Although Lennon did use drugs at points in his life, it was not drugs that killed this rock and roll legend. Marc David Chapman killed John Lennon, December 8, 1980. John and Yoko were walking back to their apartment at the Dakota in New York City, when John heard, “Mr. Lennon”. John turned to look and Chapman shot him. John was rushed to the hospital and doctors worked to save Lennon but could not. John Lennon was only 40 years old.
The world mourned Lennon’s death and peace vigils spread to remember John’s fight for peace. His legend as a Beatle forever changed the shape of music but his contribution was much more than musical. Lennon was ultimately a humanist who believed in his heart that “All you need is love.” Lennon also called for “power to the people.”
