| By understanding history, we can assure a happier and hipper future for all. Let’s take a virtual trip back to the sixties! The hippy counterculture emerged in San Francisco, Los Angeles, New York, and London around 1964 when a number of social, economic, political and cultural forces came into alignment. Unfortunately, after just a few years, the hippy culture was driven underground by a conservative Republican backlash (led by Richard Nixon). This aggressive campaign against dissent culminated in college shootings during May 1970 (the year I graduated high school.) Learn about key events from each year, which are outlined in several main categories: arts and culture; social change and activism; and politics and economics. Start at the top and read about all the events during this exciting time. Or, click on a specific year to see what was happening during that period.
